Station Area Plans
What is a station area plan?
In 2022, state leaders decided the transit system along the Wasatch Front should play a key role in improving the lives of Utahns by providing affordable housing, focusing on improving air quality, and reducing traffic congestion. As part of that effort, a new law (HB462) was passed that suggests cities with rail stations to create what's called a "station area plan."
A station area plan (SAP) looks at the area within one half mile (or about a 10-minute walk) of a UTA light rail or FrontRunner station. SAPs focus on how people get to and from the station and how the area around it can grow and flourish in the future. The main goal is to make it easier for people to walk, bike, and especially to enjoy the use and ease of public transit—all while encouraging more housing, jobs, and activities to do nearby, so people don’t need to rely on vehicles as their main mode of transportation.
